What is Microsoft Copilot Pro?

22nd January 2026

Microsoft Copilot Pro is the paid, performance tier of Microsoft’s AI assistant, designed to give users priority access to the latest AI models. Its standout feature is deep integration into the Microsoft 365 ecosystem, allowing the AI to work directly inside apps like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote.

However, as of October 1, 2025, Microsoft no longer sells “Copilot Pro” as a standalone add-on. Instead, existing subscribers and new users are directed to the Microsoft 365 Premium plan.

Microsoft now positions Premium as the definitive single subscription that combines the standard benefits of Microsoft 365 Family with the advanced AI capabilities previously found in Copilot Pro, alongside additional premium features.

What features do you get with Copilot Pro?

The primary benefit of the upgrade is reliability. While free users often face slowdowns during peak hours, the paid tier guarantees priority access to Microsoft’s most advanced AI models. This ensures you receive faster responses and uninterrupted use even when servers are under heavy load.

Crucially, the upgrade places Microsoft Copilot directly into the workflow of your Microsoft 365 desktop and web apps. This allows you to draft, rewrite, analyse, and build content right inside the tools you use every day without switching windows.

Beyond productivity, the subscription upgrades image generation. It increases image generation and editing limits in Designer(formerly bing image creator) and supported Microsoft 365 experiences. You get 60 image credits per month for Personal and Family, and extensive usage beyond standard credit limits for Premium. Additionally, subscribers gain early access to experimental features through its Frontier program, allowing them to test new capabilities before they roll out to the general public.

Do you need Microsoft 365 to use Copilot?

Yes, if you want the app integration. You can technically use the free version of Copilot chat with a standard Microsoft account via the web or the standalone app. However, to access the AI assistant directly inside Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, or OneNote, you must have a Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, or Premium subscription.

Your experience will depend heavily on which tier you choose.

How Microsoft Copilot Pro works day to day

In practice, the tool becomes a natural extension of your workspace. You use it exactly where you are already working, whether that is chatting in the standalone app or prompting the sidebar in Word. You communicate with it just like any other chat tool, but because it is integrated, you can immediately move the output into your drafts, spreadsheets, or emails.

Currently,Copilot Pro features are available in Microsoft Office apps such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote. The specific availability depends on your Microsoft 365 plan and how Microsoft is packaging consumer credits at the time.

Regarding voice capabilities, Voice gets 30 minutes per day on Microsoft 365 Personal, 30 minutes per day on Microsoft 365 Family, and 60 minutes per day on Microsoft 365 Premium. Copilot Voice has no limits in the Copilot app.

Note: Microsoft retired the Copilot GPT Builder in July 2024, so it is no longer possible to create custom GPTs in the consumer versions.

How much does Microsoft Copilot Pro cost?

That is basically Microsoft 365 Premium, which starts at £18.99 per month or £189.99 per year. You can usually start with a one-month free trial, but for the most up-to-date figures and any live discounts, it is always worth checking  Microsoft’s pricing page.

To determine if that higher price is actually justified, you need to compare it against the standard Personal and Family plans, which cost just £8.49 and £10.49 per month, respectively. While both of these cheaper plans include Copilot, they are limited by a monthly allotment of “AI credits,” where a single credit represents a distinct action, such as asking Copilot to summarize your inbox or draft a new email.

The subscription owner gets a fixed allowance of these credits each month, and once they are used up, you hit usage limits for some AI features until your credits refresh. By contrast, the Premium tier offers the highest usage limits for many Microsoft Copilot features, so you can work with fewer interruptions from limits. Furthermore, Premium adds exclusive access to advanced AI features as soon as they roll out, including premium agents like Researcher and Analyst.

Finally, on both Family and Premium subscriptions, the advanced AI features apply strictly to the subscription owner. Unlike the storage and apps, which can be shared, the Copilot benefits cannot be passed on to other family members. This means Premium usually makes the most sense when one specific person in the household is a power user who needs those higher limits.

Should you upgrade to Microsoft 365 Premium (Copilot Pro)?

Ultimately, the decision to upgrade depends entirely on how much time you spend inside the Microsoft 365 apps. If you are a power user who regularly writes documents, analyzes complex data in Microsoft Excel, or creates presentations, having AI built directly into your workflow will save you considerable time. In that scenario, the efficiency gains easily justify the higher monthly cost. Conversely, casual users who only need occasional help will likely find the free version or the credits included in the standard Personal and Family plans perfectly sufficient.

However, for freelancers and small business owners working from home, Microsoft 365 Premium hits a specific sweet spot. It offers a straightforward path to advanced features without the complexity of enterprise licensing. The best way to decide is simply to use the one-month free trial; if you find the tools becoming part of your daily routine, the subscription is likely worth keeping.
