Connectivity – We need it more than ever!

The way we are consuming data has certainly changed over the last few months, with many of us becoming accustomed to speedy internet access to our business applications and data as we have been consuming our home broadband services for working in many cases.

For many, this will mean we have been using Super-Fast broadband services (services providing in excess of 30Mbps download) and those of us who are lucky enough to be in the right areas, Ultra-Fast broadband which can deliver speeds up to 1000Mbps download (Yes, that is 1Gbps).  But why is this important?

Well for many organisations, an Internet connection, whilst essential, it may not necessary have been a consideration for many before we found ourselves in lockdown. With many of us now going back to the office, we may become frustrated with sharing the bandwidth with others, seeing some tasks seem noticeably longer (such as downloading/uploading to one drive, accessing websites, etc) now we are sharing our bandwidth with the office again.

We have spoken about considerations around the connectivity in offices as we adopt to a different way of working.  Working with our ISP, Zen Internet, we have identified hot spots in the UK where the latest, Ultra-Fast broadband technology is available.  Fibre to the Premise (FTTP), the next generation broadband allows for Internet speeds of up to 1000Mbps…. 12.5 times quicker than the best Super-Fast connections, is being rolled out quicker, than well Ultra-Fast broadband.

Now you might be thinking, that’s going to cost me a small fortune.  Are you sitting down?

As the product is becoming more mainstream and more readily available (44,000 new premises per week are being connected) the cost has come down with the top end services being available for sub £100 per month.

Now maybe you have been thinking since being back in the office, or even before lockdown:

“We need a decent internet connection, but the cost of a leased line is a little bit too much”

Getting 1Gbps download for sub £100 is amazing.

That monthly figure could see you:-

  • Adopt a Voice over IP Solution such as Microsoft Business Voice within Teams, replacing costly on-premise phone systems and ISDN services in the process (learn more about Teams here)

  • Begin to rely on the cloud for more services. Why not? The internet is nearly as quick as your Local Area Network

  • Consolidate other services like CCTV on to a single connection

  • Host more remote meetings using Video Conferencing tools like Microsoft Teams

  • Provide access to key systems in the office to remote staff without worrying about the impact on the internet service

Just think, that next big iPhone or Windows update, won’t clog up your network again as everybody tries to do it in the office.*

Now the broadband options range from traditional Super-Fast speeds of 80Mbps download and a host in between.  1Gbps is a lot of bandwidth and it may be a smaller connection (with a smaller monthly cost) is better suited to your business needs.

It certainly worth a check to see what is available to see if you too can benefit from the Ultra-Fast Broadband revolution.

*We recommend staff update their personal phones outside of the office.
